Helmets to Hardhats

By | March 22, 2015

[March 22, 2015] Earlier this week I attended a Veterans Job Fair in central New Jersey; hosted by a Rider University. I had the opportunity to speak with nearly 100 vendor representatives. In particular I was impressed by Helmets to Hardhats – an organization dedicated to placing our men and women of the Armed Forces into building and construction careers.1

Leadership comes in many forms and those who have led H2H to successfully helping our military veteran are to be commended. There are many who offer to help our veterans but few meet the high standards and passion of these folks. I like this organization because it brings together businesses, trade unions, and the veterans and gives the vet a hard-skill trade that is highly employable.2

Employers need well trained, disciplined, dependable, and hard working employees that are proven performers. H2H shows our veterans how to make the transition from the military into the right construction trade position. H2H also marries the veteran to a training program so that the employer knows that they are getting both a military veteran and a well-trained person for the job. Quality counts.

America’s building trade unions are in the lead by providing the core of this program and demonstrating their dedication to the military veteran. Hats off to all the unions, employers, and H2H that make this possible.

[2] Sean McGarvey, President of Building and Construction Trades Department said it best, “The Helmets to Hardhats program represents an exceptional link between the mission of the defender and the mission of the builder. And it’s the story of how the unions and employers of an entire industry have come together not just to reward those who have served our nation with dedication, honor, and courage, but to enlist these veterans – along with their discipline, values, and training – into a mission to build a new America for the 21st century.”
