Hero: Davy Crockett

By | July 3, 2017

[July 3, 2017]  As we look back across time it is difficult to ascertain the qualities of most of humankind’s best leadership except for those who have made deep contributions.  Davy Crockett is one of those who tackles our imaginations and pricks our interest in many ways.  He is a true American folk hero and fits that mold because he is also a man who provides us with a standard of honesty, humor, and humility.

Tomorrow on the 4th of July we celebrate Independence Day here in the United States.  Davy Crockett was one of those who helped keep the nation strong and was willing to die for his country to ensure it stayed strong.  It is not surprise for those of us who were taught – usually as children – about his exploits.  One thing I remember my third grade teacher Mrs. Olsen telling us was that Davy Crockett was a “natural leader.”

“You may all go to Hell, and I will go to Texas.” – Davy Crockett

As a child I was ecstatic when my dad asked if my brother and I would like to go to see the movie, The Alamo (1960) at the local theater.  He would take us there on a Friday evening; a rare treat.  To this day I remember the movie as John Wayne played Colonel Davy Crockett and Richard Widmark played Colonel Jim Bowie.  It was only then that I discovered that Davy Crockett, from Tennessee, died at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.

Crockett fought in the War of 1812 alongside Andrew Jackson in the Tennessee militia.  He later served in the Tennessee General Assembly and in the U.S. House of Representatives.  By the time he decided to travel to Texas to help with an imminent revolution against Mexico, he was already famous; drawing crowds as he made his way to Texas.  Crockett and the remaining defenders at the Alamo were killed on March 6, 1836.1

Davy Crockett was known to be a hard worker, honest, intelligent (although he had little formal education), and had a great sense of humor.  These are the very traits that endear people to others.  Social skills are necessary for great leadership and he possessed a personality larger than others.

He will continue to be remembered for the many good things he accomplished and for his courage.  As it should be, Davy Crockett is a true American hero.
