[June 23, 2018]  Everyone has defined leadership in a different way. According to William Alan Cohen, “Leadership is the art of influencing others to their maximum performance to accomplish any task, objective or project.”

Owning a company does not only involve taking up the office space, naming the company, registering it and running it successfully but also requires one person to be a leader who can influence other people and can obtain best out of them in order to attain some organizational goals.

ARE THE LEADERS MADE OR BORN?

People across the world possess some inborn qualities. Some are born with an amazing voice, some have athletic talents, some are good at dancing, someone is a great painter because of which they excel in their respective areas while other people will fail if they try to enter into someone else’s area.

Question is whether the quality of leadership is possessed by everyone or you have to put that quality into them.

LEADERS ARE NOT BORN, THEY ARE MADE:

Leadership is a quality which one can attain through practice, education, and training. It is a learning process and anyone can learn it through all the opportunities that they get to learn the skill.

LEADERS ARE NOT MADE, THEY ARE BORN:

People possess certain inborn qualities which make them suitable for leadership but there is always a thin line between learning a skill and mastering in one skill.

You can always learn a skill if you don’t have it because if leaders are born then there is no point of all the leadership theories and studying it.

Leadership can be learned as an art through continuous training and education. Anyone can learn this skill if he or she wishes to.

To become a strong leader, you should acquire some leadership qualities which are as follows:

  1. YOUR VISION SHOULD BE CLEAR:

You should always have a clear sense of perception. Leaders always know what they want to do and where they want to reach within the prescribed time. Their intentions are always clear. They always see the bigger side of the picture in order to attain organizational goals.

  1. LEARN TO TAKE RISKS:

There is a famous saying ‘NO RISK NO GAIN’. Leaders always take risks in order to achieve more even if the outcomings are not assured. If you want to be a leader you should have the risk-taking ability by taking into account the pros and cons of all the options available.

  1. DECISION-MAKING POWER:

Leaders always make impactful decisions. Always believe in your skills and capabilities and don’t be afraid of making a decision. Even if the decision turns out to be a wrong one should don’t get stressed either learn from it and move on.

  1. BE CONFIDENT:

As a leader, you need to be confident enough so that you make sure that your subordinates follow you. You should always feel confident about all your decisions, only then you will be followed. Show your decisiveness and confidence so that your followers can trust you.

  1. BE INSPIRING:

If you want others to follow you then you should be inspired enough by setting a good example in front of your followers. Keep motivating and deal with them with a positive approach. In case of any problem, they will always look up to you that how are you dealing with the situation. So you should always inspire your subordinates.

  1. BE A GOOD COMMUNICATOR:

You can never become a good leader if you are not good at communicating. A leader always communicates well with his team and make them clear about all his plans and strategies. Good communication can help you to build a strong team as words have the power to deliver everything you want to say and to achieve better results.

  1. DELEGATE YOUR TASKS:

You should always delegate some tasks to your subordinates as you cannot do everything yourself. A good leader always focuses on important matters and empower his follower by delegating other matters to them. In this way, the leader can win the trust of his followers and also get the support in order to attain the required goals.

  1. BE CREATIVE AND INNOVATIVE:

If you want to become a leader you should be creative and innovative. Always come up with new and unique ideas so that you and your team can stand out from the crowd. Coming with new ideas is not the only requirement, need of the hour is to turn the ideas into reality.

CONCLUSION: Every person who wants to become a leader, must possess these leadership qualities. You will have to build confidence and trust in other people to let hem follow you. All these traits must be present in a person to be a good leader.

Leaders often write information that they want to convey to their subordinates. Their writing must be concise and accurate so that reader is able to understand it easily. Good work here, Jessica. I appreciate your work as one of thoughtfulness and thoroughness. Too bad that many “wanna-be” leaders ignore what you have written in favor of wanting to be liked or be popular with their workers. Leadership is hard but greatly satisfying.

A couple of days ago Gen Satterfield wrote about how to create a vision (https://www.theleadermaker.com/leader-vision-how-create-it/) and I see that your Number 1 is also about having a clear vision. I cannot overemphasize the importance of it too. I’ve seen too many leaders who fail with having a vision or communicating one they have. Great article. Thanks.
