Leadership on the U.S. Immigration Debate

By | July 30, 2014

[July 30, 2014] Anyone not under the proverbial rock these days knows that the U.S. immigration debate on policy is about as heated as it can get. It seems that everyone has an opinion, that opinion is not just the right one for the country but morally and constitutionally the right one. One side argues that U.S. federal law is not being enforced while others argue that those laws are wrong. What is needed is a clear voice spelling out the issues in a professional way, simplifying the issues and clarifying the foggy concerns.

Senior LeadershipMany have said that there needs to be a “debate” on the immigration issue. That is true. However, what really needs to occur is for American to establish what its values are regarding immigration. The debate also needs to clarify the roles for citizens in the entire process. So far, if this has occurred, no one is reporting on it in the media. That is what citizens need to demand from their political leaders. But we citizens are demanding solutions. Those solutions do not have any level of understanding behind them so even if a solution was to occur, citizens would not be completely on board and not satisfied.

“Calling an illegal alien an ‘undocumented immigrant’ is like calling a drug dealer an ‘unlicensed pharmacist.’” – U.S. Citizen

“The immigration laws are being enforced, though we are faced with an extraordinary situation where thousands of people, young people especially, are fleeing Central America for economic reasons to get away from really endemic violence in their countries.” – Eric Holder

Whose job is it to tackle this difficult task? Whoever that may be, or group of people that it may be, will have their hands full trying to get people to listen. Fewer people today are willing to listen … that train left the station some time ago. Today citizens have hardened their positions based upon what they hear on television, radio, or read in blogs. It will be most difficult unless that senior leaders has a large about of credibility with the American people.
