Learn the Rules and Play Them Better …

By | June 13, 2017

[June 13, 2017]  Learn the rules and play them better than anyone else; this is the embodiment of intelligent, powerful leadership.  As children we learn quickly that it is best to play by the rules.  Being accused of cheating or unfair play is a stinging rebuke for those who fail to do so.  It comes as no surprise that leadership means learning the rules, obeying them, but also how to compete and win too.

“The object is to win fairly, by the rules – but to win.” – Vince Lombardi, American football coach

Nothing is worse than leaders who exempt themselves from the rules others are required to follow.  Great leaders not only learn the rules but are the best at following them and winning by playing by the rules.  This is the centerpiece of American core values and thus unsurprising that so many who share those same values led the world in innovation exhibiting those leadership qualities (see links here, here, and here).

Learning what the rules are and following those rules, regulations, laws, etc. is obedience.  To a leader it also means explaining the purpose of those rules and enforcing obedience for the good order of the group.  Furthermore, to ensure a leader has the respect of others means a leader should follow those same rules.

For example, “obedience” is one of the 12 laws of Boy Scouting.1  As part of those laws of scouting, the scout law recites it at each meeting and on important events to reinforce those values for all scouts and adult leaders.  Also, the U.S. Army oath is required of all its members and says, in part, that the soldier “… will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me according to regulations …”2

Rules are designed to make our lives better, smoother, fairer, safer, and less complicated.  And while rules don’t cover everything (and they shouldn’t anyway), the purpose and intent of any rule gives us a starting point from which we can address issues not covered.  Because we live in a complex world full of rules (regulations, laws, etc.), it is incumbent upon leaders to understand this and help others through a straightforward explanation.

Those who understand this and succeed by adhering to rules (or in spite of the rules, some will say) are those who are among the best.  These are the leaders in any group because they are winners.
