[October 20, 2016]  Great leaders are those that can simplify complexity and chaos, who can cut through to the heart of an argument, and offer solutions that everyone can understand.  This is what the best leaders from business, the military, and government do day-in and day-out.  Donald Trump, a billionaire businessman, is the Republican candidate for U.S. president who embodies many of those qualities of great leadership.

Many political experts predicted Trump would never be the Republican nominee.  They were wrong and wrong by a long shot.  They now predict he cannot win.  Like before, Trump may prove them to be irrelevant pontificators of a bygone era of politics where the insiders ruled the day.

Donald Trump does possess a number of leadership traits, not unlike those of strong leaders from the past:

  • Authentic
  • Tough and strong-willed
  • Charming, charismatic, and a motivator of others
  • Courageous
  • Unconventional and controversial
  • Loyal to the nation, its military, workers, and families
  • Possesses a winner’s attitude
  • Great business acumen

 “I don’t like losers.” – Donald Trump

This quote says a lot about Trump.  He is a winner by choice and sees his own life as being one of winning almost every time he does something.  His philosophy about government is that it‘s too big, too expensive, and too incompetent to do what’s right for the American people.  His slogan for his campaign is “Make America Great Again”1 is consistent with his theme of being a winner.

It has been said that great leaders have a heart for people.   This is what Donald Trump would like for people to know about him.  Controversy about his narcissistic behavior and putdown of women and minorities has some merit to it yet does not appear to be a major factor affecting those who love him.
