V-E Day and Victory in War

[May 8, 2017]  Those of us not adults on May 8, 1945 have no idea the rejoicing that took place on this date 72 years ago.  Victory in Europe was achieved at enormous cost in lives; so much given the price paid is simply beyond human imagination.  Yet when Nazi Germany unconditionally surrendered, and later Imperial Japan, the victory was one of the last victories in war for humankind.

V-E Day is a celebration of the defeat of Nazi Germany but it is also a victory over evil.  Philosophers tell us that there will always be war and the more practical among us say that it is wrong to declare war as a futile act because it does solve things.  World War II, the most destructive war ever fought, brought about the utter defeat of Nazism and Japanese Imperialism.  Today, both these political dogmas are mere fringe ideologies.

War requires victory.  Anything short of the destruction of an evil ideology is bound to see it rise again.  The Korean War was fought when North Korea invaded the south to impose a Communist dictatorship upon it.  With the intervention of a United Nations military force, mostly supplied by Western democracies, the goal of a united Korea under the evil hand of Communism was averted.

But evil still exists today in North Korea and it threatens nuclear war with South Korea, Japan, the United States and many of the democratic nations in that part of the Pacific Ocean.  The 1953 Armistice Agreement settled little yet the deaths of more than a million people did nothing to settle the underlying issues of an aggressive North Korea.  In this case, evil was not destroyed but left to continue through a political settlement and appeasement.

We see a similar scenario with the evil of the Taliban, al-Qaeda, the Islamic State, Hezbollah, and many other such groups that use Islam as a basis for their reign of terror.  Western nations are reluctant to destroy the ideology, for a number of reasons, and are willing to have an “accommodation” with these groups.  The future only holds more terror, more destructive terror attacks, and the deaths of many.

Victory over Islamic terrorism is the only answer.  This means that all of the many terror organizations must be utterly destroyed along with their radical ideology.  How to do this and yet separate them from the mainstream Islamic faith – and its variants – is something that will take a strong leader and nations with the will to do it.
