3 Hiring Tips from an Executive Recruiter

By | November 9, 2019

[November 9, 2019]  In today’s ultra-competitive market of qualified job candidates competing for the same positions, your hiring process is critical. Nobody knows more about the “dos and don’ts” of recognizing and evaluating talent than does an experienced executive recruiter. Here are a few tips from an expert in the field to help you find the best talent for your company.

Make Sure They Fit Your Culture

Is the candidate an overall fit for the personality of the company and the atmosphere of the office? They should buy into the vision that the owners or CEOs have for the company. Adaptability is a key component to settling into a new environment, too, so try to gauge their ability to embrace change.

They Should be Hungry

One of the most consistent characteristics potential executive-level candidates who go on to succeed possess is a hunger and thirst for continued success. For some people, it is a first-time success that they are seeking, and they are especially motivated to prove themselves. For others, it is the validation of succeeding multiple times to show that their techniques and management philosophies are valuable in numerous settings and environments.

Something else that goes along with hunger is curiosity. Those who stay curious about what it is they do, what it is that their competitors do, and the latest breakthroughs or trends in their industry are usually the ones who have the most success.

Consider How the Business Model is Changing

The way people and organizations conduct themselves is changing. From how we interact with our coworkers, to how we engage our customers, to shipping and receiving, social consciousness, and environmental impact, companies have so much more to consider than just the bottom line. Take the time to think about everything that you really need from this candidate, above and beyond qualifications and experience. And after you have figured it out, be open and transparent with the potential new addition about it.

Bonus Tip – Things Not to Do

Here are just a few final suggestions on mistakes to avoid when deciding if a candidate is right for your company:

  1. Don’t Assume You Know the Candidate Before You Do
  2. Don’t Reward Arrogance
  3. Don’t Ignore Red Flags
  4. Don’t Lead the Candidate on if the Fit isn’t Right
  5. Don’t Close the Door on a Future Association

Any of these missteps in the hiring process can have major and long-lasting impacts on your company. Disregarding any of these warnings from our expert executive recruiter can lead to you hiring someone who threatens to undermine the morale and the direction that you have worked so hard to instill in your employees.

The hard part, and I do agree with you, is finding out if the prospective hire is “hungry”. In other words, do they truly want the job; passion is what we want. I think you would agree that these make the best hires. BUT, and this is a big BUT, it is our responsibility to help them maintain that passion. That is what leaders do.

Fantastic insight Eric! I couldn’t agree more. It’s a challenge, but nothing too daunting for a true leader.
