Revelers run with Torrestrella ranch fighting bulls during the running of the bulls of the San Fermin festival, in Pamplona, Spain, July 7, 2014.

[July 07, 2014] Savage manliness? Running of the bulls in Spain rates with Rugby and Calcio Fiorentino as a sport that requires very special talents. My wife says that those who run with a bunch of bulls chasing them are crazy. I like to think of them as having physical courage mixed with a little insanity. However, it is a rites of passage for many young men in Spain and a few other countries.

Today began the official running of the bulls in Pamplona Spain. The headlines read “Bull skewers man in Spain’s opening Pamplona run.” That should not be a surprise to anyone who has seen this annual event. When there are a dozen or so scared bulls running in a narrow street with several hundred men trying to avoid getting gored, somebody is likely to get hurt.

To see some of the highlights of this year’s first day run, go to this YouTube link here. My favorite part is the screaming. Only minor injuries today.
