Why is Hillary Clinton’s Campaign Faltering?

By | August 7, 2015

[August 7, 2015]  Lack of trustworthiness!  This may come as no surprise to those who are following national news.  The political “experts” that got Donald Trump’s campaign popularity wrong are getting much of Clinton’s campaign problems correct.  The biggest problem for her is not a so much an aversion to the email and Bengazi scandals but a lack of people who trust her to do the right thing.  And that is a big deal in politics.

Some however still believe there are other factors like an underperforming national economy1, a damaging behind-the-scenes war between the Obamas and Clintons2, that she  believes the rules don’t apply to her3, and that all the controveries surrounding her are ginned up by her Republican opponents4.  The eamil scandal however will not go away soon.  The FBI just opened a criminal investigation into the issue despite denials by the Clinton campaign.  Those denials add to the mixture of bad press and compounds the idea that Clinton is not trustworthy enough to be the next U.S. president

Many will vote for Hillary Clinton because she is a Democrat and the first woman to seriously challange for the position.  Being a Clinton and married to a very popular past president, Bill Clinton, and being flush with cash in her campaign are two very strong advantages she has right now.  Current Vice President Joe Biden, the only real potential rival has not made a commitment to run against her.  His popularity is fairly good and most people trust him.  Although sometimes viewed as a bumbling, somewhat confused political leader he is the only alternative that has promise at this point early in the campaign cycle.

If we look at Clinton and compare her traits against those we expect from a senior political leader, she is weak on several points including: being honest and straight forward, lacks empathy, is not inspirational, egotistical, and is unethical in her financial dealings with her charity.  She certainly lacks the patience and sturdiness of a senior leader and perhaps this flows from her lack of relevant political experience.  As First Lady, about eight years as Senator from New York, and past Secretary of State is not considered sufficient experience by most.  Donald Trump has even less political experience, yet he is doing well against other Republican candidates.

Hillary Clinton’s Democratic party has also seen a few self-inflicted wounds that don’t help her.  The Democratic National Party (DNC) chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz recently could not articulate the difference between a socialist and a Democrat5.  The party also pushed any candidate debates to October6.

Ultimately, however, Hillary Clinton lacks the qualities that her husband Bill Clinton showed us so well with his ability to “connect” with just about anyone.  So far she has not shown the passion or desire to be president or to put together a campaign machine that operates efficiently or effectively.  But it’s her lack of trustworthiness that will be her main problem and so far she’s not been able to overcome it.

Tomorrow: Why is Jeb Bush’s campaign struggling?
