Hero: Edith Cavell

By | September 19, 2015

[August 19, 2015]  Occasionally I write about a real hero here at theLeaderMaker.com in order to show those key characteristics they possessed that helped make them who they were; usually in time of war.  Today is no different but it involves a civilian nurse whose execution by firing squad outraged the world during World War One.  Edith Cavell helped save more than 200 British and French soldiers and was accused of treason for spying against the Germans.

In 1907 she moved to Brussels as the new director of training school for nurses but was caught behind enemy lines after the German invasion of Belgium in 1914.1  The German government accused her of spying (whether she did or did not spy is still controversial) and after her capture then proceeded to execute her by a 16-man German firing squad at dawn on October 12, 1915.  Cavell’s execution created an international outcry against Germany.

“Patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone” – Edith Cavell on the evening before her execution

Edith Cavell was already notable as a pioneer of modern nursing in Belgium.  Her strong Anglican beliefs had propelled her to help all those who needed it, both German and Allied soldiers.Very outspoken, she often talked about helping people in time of need and was driven by a strong passion to do so.  It is no surprise that her role to help British and French soldiers escape the German war machine was a perfect fit for her thinking.

“She faced them gentle and bold.” – from a Poem entitled Edith Cavell by Laurence Binyon

Recognized by Britain for her heroic efforts, her body was brought back following her execution granted a state funeral.  Showing how revered her actions were, thousands turned out for the unveiling of a memorial dedicated to her in Trafalgar Square in London.

Edith Cavell is a real hero.  Here at theLeaderMaker.com we set her up as an example of bravery, perseverance, and intelligence.  We also salute her for her great works.
