The Culture of Aircraft Crashes

By | February 13, 2023

[February 13, 2023]   Regular readers of this blog know that one of my jobs is to highlight others who can point out lessons we can learn from the mistakes people make.  Petter Hörnfeldt (Mentour Pilot), a Swedish Captain, shows airline failures, mechanical problems, and the human element and explains why aircraft crashes occur.

Hörnfeldt is the creator and producer of Mentour Pilot, a video series on YouTube with the same name, launched in 2015.  In his videos are details of crashes, focusing on commercial airlines.  He has a website and Facebook page that give considerable insight into the human dimension of crashes.

It is clear that Hörnfeldt is interested in the safety of air travel, passengers and crew.  He has found that human reactions make a clear difference when things go wrong.  I find this an interesting departure from what most of us would expect.

For example, a video he produced this weekend discusses the “deadly culture” of the now-defunct One-Two-GO, a low-cost airline based in Bangkok, Thailand.  He goes behind the scenes to give us more than the typical “human error” reason for a crash.  You can see the YouTube video here, 30:36 minutes.

I highly recommend his YouTube channel.  If you travel by commercial air, you must hear what he says.

All the better that unsafe airlines go out of existance. Knowing the ‘culture’ is imperative.

Yep. This is why I read this leadership blog because it heightens my awareness on what makes things work, or not work and fail. This blog is absolutely my favorite and long ago I searched and searched for the best leadership websites and found this one to be at the top. Keep up the work you are doing here for us, Gen. Satterfield.

I too recommend Hörnfeldt’s videos. Watch one and you will not need me to say why it is worth your time.

Now this is a man I hope to have as my pilot where ever I might travel. His videos are extremely well put together and somehow entertaining. He is also very humble in his approach and shows considerable knowledge of large aircraft. If only others were as outstanding as he is.

Thank you for highlighting this man and noting his useful, entertaining works. I’m in awe that pilots can do such a safe and meaningful job that moves us around the globe. Thank you all.

I went back and read some of the links that Gen. Satterfield provided. What I liked about a couple of the videos by Petter Hörnfeldt (Mentour Pilot) was that he is crystal clear when he talks and is compassionate about those killed in aircraft crashes.

Wendy, yes, I was thinking the same. And, Happy Valentine’s Day to you and others of this blog, and esp. Gen. Satterfield.

This is what Petter says about himself.
I am married to a wonderful woman and I have 2 little sons and a little dog called Molly. I have more than 10 000 hours on the Boeing 737 and I intend to do many many more of them. The reason you are reading this is because I started a new journey in 2015. The journey on Social Media. I had been reading a lot about social media during the years before but I hadn’t really fully understood it. I was very disappointed every time i surfed the web and looked at aviation content since everybody seemed so miserable. I couldn’t find ANY good, unbiased, positive and constructive content anywhere so I decided to start my own Youtube channel. The Social Media experience has been another highlight of my career so far. The Youtube channel has grown massively and I am getting in contact with so many wonderful people every day!

… just another reason to go to his media sites and see what he has to say for us. If you fly, get to his channels now and hear what he is saying about airline safety and the ‘culture’ of safety. ❤

The kind of guy you can have a beer with and not know that he is a very successful airline pilot.

Yes, he runs a great YouTube video site. I’ve been watching his productions for a year now and Petter does a great job of explaining the details of crashes or near crashes in a clear way. Thanks Gen. Satterfield for highlighting the Mentor Pilot.
