Why Women are Attracted to Men in Uniform

By | April 8, 2018

[April 8, 2018]  Is that a sexist comment, or what?  Perhaps, but I’ll write about it anyway because there is some truth to it and because it’s something leaders should keep in the back of their minds.  My grandmother was especially fond of men in uniform and although she never saw me in mine, she was a big fan of my soldiering in the U.S. Army.

To be clear, this article is not just about military men; it is also about any man in uniform to include police, firefighters, and the like.  It can even include those who wear any distinctive dress that is attributed to any professional occupation; like those in the medical field.1

The first question that should be asked is, “Is this even true?”  According to psychologist and relationship expert, Dr. Jeanette Raymond, not only is this true but “the ‘uniform’ [for a woman looking for a prospective mate] may signify that the man is able to manage life’s troubles.”2

I’ve also heard, but I don’t necessarily believe other reasons … for example, women see men in uniform as being rugged, dangerous, sexy, romantic, clean, mentally tough, financially secure, and so forth (see the LovePanky website [yes, it’s real] for more).  In my day, women described men in uniform as being “cool” to hang out with.

Others who have studied this behavior have argued that there is clearly a link between women’s attraction to men and the symbolic nature of the uniform men wear.  We can call it any kind of bad “-ism” we want but the fact remains, it is there for all of us to see and comment on.  Suggestions, like my grandmother, that it must be in women’s genes is probably not true.

More likely, why women are attracted to uniformed men because those men are part of something bigger than ourselves; something that helps protect all of us.  They are also a member of a group with a good reputation because membership means being truthful, honest, and true to your word.

  1. Some even say that men in prison (they do wear uniform-like clothing) also attract women. There are multiple websites that deal with the issue of husbands and boyfriends in prison/jail.  http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=44

See the “Prison Wives Club” youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fayaPSSAA80
Are these women attracted to the prison uniform? I wonder if they are attracted to something else? Maybe, getting attention.
I personally would be embarrassed to be on this video.

I am convinced this is true based on my personal observations. However, the feminists will be all over such observations because they are against anything that implies they somehow might need a man.

SERIOUS or FUNNY? I can’t tell which. Maybe SARCASM. Either way, informative … but I knew this.

As we used to say in the military, if you don’t like what I say, then “just bend my dogtags.” Way to go! I love it when you’re not PC (which does occur sometimes General).

Interesting to say the least. I heard this all my life. My grandparents told me stories of how they met and it was because (at least in the beginning) that my grandmother was attracted to my granddad because he was at a social in his uniform. They married, he went to WW2, returned home, raised a family, and lived well. Maybe there IS something to this.

I’m not so sure it applies. In fact, it might be the opposite. Men who see women in uniform will see those women as being too manly for them.

Yes, interesting. I too heard this and will put in my two-cents worth that there is something to it.

I don’t know how much of this is tongue and cheek (humor for those from California) but I find it to be accurate in many ways. What I really read from this is that you are not politically correct.
