Cubans Rise Up Against Communism

By | March 16, 2026

[March 16, 2026]  In the streets of Havana and beyond, the chant of “Down with Communism” echoes a long-suppressed yearning for liberty in Cuba. Recent protests have erupted, which is signaling the crumbling of the socialist regime that has gripped the island nation for decades.

What began as rallies against all-too-frequent power outages and food shortages has morphed into a confrontation with the authoritarian government. This underscores the abject failures of communism, which inevitably lead to scarcity and despair.  This leaves ordinary Cubans to bear the brunt of ideological extremism.

The scenes in Morón, in the Ciego de Ávila region, paint a clear picture of a people pushed to their limits. Days after the initial chants in Havana, residents flooded the streets in what started as a non-violent pushback against President Miguel Diaz-Canel’s administration.

The rally quickly escalated, with protesters targeting government buildings amid blackouts that cripple daily life and emptied store shelves. This is the predictable outcome of a system that prioritizes state control over individual enterprise, stifling innovation and prosperity while enriching a small, corrupt elite.

In a stunning admission of weakness, Diaz-Canel announced that he had initiated talks with the Trump administration to alleviate Cuba’s crippling economic crisis. This move reveals the desperation of a regime that can no longer sustain its grip without external concessions.

These negotiations under President Trump represent a pragmatic opportunity to pressure Havana toward reforms, echoing the successful hardline stances of the past that exposed the vulnerabilities of leftist dictatorships. It’s a reminder that strength, not appeasement, is key to dismantling tyrannical structures.

Cuba’s traditional patrons—Venezuela, Russia, China—seem unable or unwilling to prop up the ailing dictatorship this time. These socialist allies, themselves mired in economic turmoil and isolation, highlight the failures of their ideologies.

Without the usual bailouts, the Cuban government faces an existential threat, proving once again that communism’s promises of equality devolve into shared misery. Many have long warned of this contagion, where one flawed regime drags down its comrades, leaving citizens to suffer the consequences.

Historically, Cuba’s descent into communism under Fidel Castro promised utopia but delivered only repression and poverty. Today’s protests are a direct rebuke to that legacy, which breeds inefficiency and human rights abuses in state-run economies. The ethos of free markets, personal responsibility, and limited government stands in stark contrast, offering a blueprint for true progress.

As Cubans demand change, it’s evident that the socialist experiment has run its course, inviting a reevaluation of U.S. policies to support genuine democratic transitions.

Ultimately, the call for “Cuba Libre” is not just a slogan but an imperative for freedom-loving nations to rally behind. The current unrest, fueled by chants against communism and pleas for basic necessities, may well be the tipping point toward a brighter, freer Cuba—one that aligns with the timeless principles of liberty.

Communism is a fad of the young. Then it becomes a safeplace for old, crazy, thugs.

Only those who know communism know its true tradition of tragedy.

Maybe the Cuban Communists can call their friends in Iran to get an idea of what President Trump can do for their life expectancy.

Communism is horrible. Too bad normal people cannot figure that out, and I say that because ordinary people keep on wanting to try it. Bad decision.

In an article now almost exactly 6 years ago, Gen. Satterfield wrote about Cuban Communism.
“Cuba is a decrepit country. Communism has been tried in 28 countries and each of them failed economically. They also failed socially and politically, but that is up to the historians to tell that story. In each of these countries the population starved, propaganda ruled all literature and media, the secret police were everywhere, dissidents disappeared, and militarization was imposed on the poor population. Likewise, the creative heart of each nation adopting Communism was destroyed.” And … now we are seeing total collapse.

Winston Churchill: “Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of miseries.”

Ronald Reagan: “The march of freedom and democracy… will leave Marxism-Leninism on the ash heap of history.”
Martin Amis: “When communism failed, it wasn’t a good idea that had gone wrong, it was a bad idea that had been sustained with incredible determination.”
Just letting the words of great thinkers speak for themselves.

HAVANA (AP) — Officials in Cuba reported an islandwide blackout Monday in the country of some 11 million people as its energy and economic crises deepen and its power grid continues to crumble.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines on X noted a “complete disconnection” of the country’s electrical system and said it was investigating, noting there were no failures in the units that were operating when the grid collapsed.

Communism kills. Period. There has never been an exception. Never. And there never will be. Cuba is no different than North Korea, Venezuela, China, or Russia. Some are a little better than the others, but even a little bit better is not good enough. 👀

    Great article, Douglas!
Your piece powerfully captures the real suffering of the Cuban people and the clear failures of communism that have led to this breaking point. The chants of “Down with Communism” and the brave protests in Havana, Morón, and beyond show that the desire for freedom and basic dignity can only be suppressed for so long.
It’s encouraging to see the regime’s desperation in reaching out for talks amid the crisis — proof that strong, principled pressure works.
Keep shining a light on these important truths. Cuba Libre! 🇨🇺🗽
Looking forward to your next one.

Good comment, Eye Cat. Yep, Gen. Satterfield is all over it. BTW, best to not use such informal salutations with Gen. S.
