[October 27, 2022] Dr. Jordan Peterson is a psychologist who often speaks on the best way to make you a better person. He does that often with insights into the patterns of behavior we humans possess. He often speaks on the role men and women play in sexual selection. An older video shows him discussing how women select men.
Women play a massive role in the sexual selection of human beings. From an evolutionary perspective, you’re twice as likely to be a failure if you are a man than if you are a woman.
We all have twice as many female ancestors as males. That’s not impossible. All you have to do is imagine that, simplistically, every woman has one child, half the men have two, and the other half have zero. Women are more choosey mates than men by a substantial margin.
A “funny” study was done by a guy who established one of the big dating sites. He looked at how women rated men. They rated men in the 50th percentile (right in the middle) in the lower 15th percentile. What that would mean is that women rate 85 percent of men below average in desirability, according to women’s ratings.
Men are selected for their ability to move up dominance hierarchies (see link for a Harvard research on this phenomenon here). This is obvious because the ones at the top reproduce preferentially. That means the male dominance hierarchy becomes a method of selection, but allied with that is the female propensity for choice on whatever dimension the dominance hierarchy happens to arrange.
Worldwide studies of women are pretty straightforward; women mate across dominant hierarchies and up, socioeconomically. And women go for men who are about four to five years older. This may be a factor in the difficulty of males establishing economic independence. Men select mates differently; they select across and down, and men don’t care about socioeconomic status.
Women also select for male health, much like other animal species do. They select healthier and more energetic men, and if you are, you are more likely to be successful. Both sexes select each other for attractiveness. Both are selected for intelligence. Both select for personality, although there are preferential differences.
From a Darwinian perspective, nature is that which selects. That’s all it is. Sexual selection plays a massive role in human evolution.
For example, the fact we have these massive brains is very likely the consequence of a positive feedback loop in sexual selection. This means there is a preference for intelligence, which produces more intelligent men and women – and consequently bigger brains – who have more preference for intelligence.
