Leadership in the New Cold War

By | June 8, 2014

[June 08, 2014] Lately, in senior political and military circles, there have been discussions about a new type of war, a “new cold war” with China and Russia. This may seem a bit odd given what we are hearing about Russia’s efforts in the Ukraine or China’s involvement in disputes over several islands. Leadership however means clarity and clarity of the world is not something easily gained. Senior leaders are talking and that is a positive sign.

A recent article in the U.S. Army War College’s publication Parameters by Michael Roskin, outlines a strategy for this new cold war and provides commentary on how to gain from the lessons learned of the old cold war. His main point is that American leaders should be cautious. It was “patience and economics” that “tipped the balance in our favor and will do so again.”1

Several articles and books2, 3 are out that discuss this “new cold war” concept and several are very good. I will find one of the better books and put it in my upcoming “Reading List (Updates)“.
