[September 6, 2026] It’s been since late June since I last posted a Sunday Morning in Pictures. My wife says I’m “too serious” again. Fair enough. Then Canada’s new prime minister, Mark Carney, handed the internet a gift. In the middle of a real trade fight with the United States, he told Washington to “stop doing memes, stop throwing shade and stop trying to be tough” before he would talk again. That is not how grown men settle hard business. That is how a man who has been called a weasel for years discovers that the nickname stuck, and then asks the neighborhood to please stop laughing. The internet, being the internet, did the opposite. Canadians and Americans both piled on. The memes did not stop. They multiplied.
I have no brief against Canada as a country. Good neighbors, good soldiers I’ve served alongside, and a people who can take a joke when they choose to. What I do have is a low tolerance for a central banker who talks like a moral tutor and then flinches when the pictures start flying. Leadership is not asking the other side to be quieter so you can feel respected. Leadership is taking the hit, answering the substance, and moving on. These pictures are what followed Carney’s request. Some are mean. Some are accurate. A few are just funny. If you’re offended, tough nutcracker. Sit down with the coffee. Happy Labor Day, all. These Sunday pictures sure woke me up faster than the coffee. Ha Ha Ha. Mark Carney telling folks to quit the memes and the shade is about the funniest thing a grown leader can say when the heat is on. Asking people to stop laughing is not how you settle a trade fight or anything else that matters. The internet did what the internet always does and piled on even harder. Some of those shots are rough and a few are just plain mean, but a lot of them land because they show a man who talks tough then flinches. Leadership is taking the hit, answering the real problem, and moving on instead of begging for quiet. Canada has good people and good soldiers, but a banker acting like the neighborhood hall monitor does not help. Sit with the coffee and look at the pictures if you want a laugh that still makes a point. A man who cannot stand a joke about himself is going to have a long week. This batch of Sunday pictures did the job.

I want to thank you for this “Sunday Morning in Pictures” series. Yep, like others have noted in the past, you have an eye for humor and then it should come as no surprise that you once considered being a stand up comic, and later a “man of the cloth.” Ha Ha, you were neither. You were an “Army man” which was really your childhood dream. And thank you for all you do to help us become better people and great leaders; emphasis on better people because that is a precondition for great leadership. Have a great labor day, enjoy your family, enjoy your retirement, and thanks for helping out Boy Scouts and Veterans.
