Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve

[May 09, 2014] I was honored to be the guest speaker last night at an ESGR event that honored 35 employers from the state of Pennsylvania. Those employers spent two days learning what it was to be a military member in today’s service. Some of the employers were veterans themselves.

Let me introduce my readers to this wonderful organization called ESGR. Its mission is multifaceted but it is beneficial to both employers and reserve component service members. Yes, it is a Department of Defense organization. Yet, it relies heavily upon volunteers to promote cooperation and understanding between employers and service members.

Here is its mission statement:

“ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives; recognizing outstanding employer support; increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies; resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members; and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD.”1

It was wonderful to get the opportunity to meet so many private sector employers benefiting from hiring veterans and current members of the reserve components. One man served in Vietnam in the 20th Engineer Brigade. To recognize their support of our men and women in the military is the least we can do.

If you get a chance, please go to their website at http://www.esgr.mil/ and if possible become a volunteer. Thank you ESGR.
