[September 13, 2026] One of the huge advantages of living in a mostly rural area is the patriotism of its citizens. Yesterday morning, Galloway Township in New Jersey put on a “Salute to Veterans” in their Veterans’ Memorial Park. The day was perfect: good weather, high turnout, plenty of food (dogs and burgers), and the local Elks of Galloway helping our many Veterans, families, and friends to have a good time and meet other Veterans.
U.S. Coast Guard Captain Jeff Graham, and a good friend of mine, was the guest speaker. He told us four stories of local heroes from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and for heroic actions on American soil. He said that these were the ones we rarely hear about, who ran toward danger, who acted in the interest of others, and who made the personal sacrifice for the betterment of America. Selfless service stills matters. That is the core of a hero.
Following the formal part of the service was a large spread of food, including desert and drinks.

The picnic-like atmosphere ( under a big tent) capped the day off with great company, including local Veterans, politicians who care for our men and women of the military, family members, and other patriotic Americans. I know I had a wonderful time, and others did as well.
This was a time to meet new people from our community who took their time to come out and say “thanks” to those Vets who served. I’m proud of them for saying so.
One small interesting point. The Galloway Township “Salute to Veterans” was originally planned for Saturday, September 15, 2001; just four days after the Islamic terror attacks on America. Those who wanted to recognize local Vets had a choice to make after seeing the events of 9/11; should they cancel or go forward with their planned program. They decided to move forward, and yesterday was the 25th anniversary of the start of the Salute to Veterans.

🫡 I agree with you Liz, and with Gen. Satterfield that we actually need more of this. Of course, it’s about recognizing our military veterans, but it is also much more. Doing this kind of “picnic” brings people together in ways that don’t happen much anymore, and this is how it used to be where a community was close. Today we are more into working and video games — does not work out well. Thanks to Gen. Satterfield for this short story of good.
