[August 13, 2025] Dr. Jordan Peterson is a man who originates from Canada, and who likes to strike at the heart of those things that make us better as a person. In a recent interview, he talks about Canadian Patriotism and how his fellow citizens have failed the test of protecting their most important values.
This interview is a warning sign for all Western nations. Those living in the United States had best pay close attention to Dr. Peterson for we are on the same path as Canada. He speaks with the knowledge of a saint.
“Imagine a country once known for its freedom, its fairness, its unshakable values, a country that stood tall, not because it was perfect but because it cared to try. That country is now one where patriotism feels like a crime.
How did we get here? When did loving your country become a dangerous idea? When did the word of Canada on your chest start looking like a threat? It didn’t happen overnight. It happened because we stayed silent. We let them shame our history, erase our identity, rewrite our values. And we watched, politely, afraid to offend.
Why? Why are we afraid to say, ‘I love my country?’ Why is it okay to love every culture, every flag, every voice except our own? Let me say this clearly: patriotism is not hate, patriotism is not supremacy, patriotism is belonging. You belong to something greater than yourself and that’s not oppression. That’s responsibility. That’s honor.
But somewhere along the way we were told to sit down, shut up and feel guilty. Guilty for building. Guilty for protecting. Guilty for believing in the idea of Canada. While I say, enough pretending that love for your country is hate. Enough surrendering to the loudest voice in the room. Enough watching our flag be dragged through the mud while we do nothing.
Because if we keep quiet now, what will be left to stand for? This isn’t about politics. This isn’t about left or right. This is about home. And if you won’t defend your home, who will?
Canada deserves citizens who are proud, who speak truth, who rise with courage, not kneel in shame. So ‘no,’ you’re not a criminal for loving your country. Stand up. Speak up. Wake up. Do this before patriotism becomes more than a crime, before it becomes extinct.
The erosion of national pride begins with the rewriting of history. It always does. Because before you can make people hate themselves, you have to make them forget who they are. And in today’s Canada, that’s exactly what’s happening. We are watching, in real time, a nation being told to question its roots, doubt its values, and ultimately feel ashamed for existing.
They don’t need to burn flags; they just bury the meaning behind them. They don’t silence you with force; they do it with shame. The worst part, we’re letting it happen.
In schools, our children are taught more about what’ wrong with Canada than what’s right. They’re handed guilt instead of gratitude. They’re told that to be proud is to be ignorant; that to love your nation is to exclude others. Loving your home never meant hating someone else’s [home]. It means you care. It means you’re willing to protect what’s good, to fix what’ broken, and to remember what was sacrificed to get here. But when you erase the story, when you distort the history, all that’s left is confusion and blame. Confused, guilty citizens don’t defend nations, they surrender them.
What’s terrifying isn’t just the attack on patriotism, it’show easy we’ve made the job for those attacking it. For example, we apologize before we speak, we lower our voices, when we say we’re proud, we hide behind sarcasm, behind fake neutrality because to openly love your country, that’s risky now. It might cost you a job, a friend, a platform. Isn’t that insane, that in a nation built on freedom, the one thing you’re not free to express anymore is your loyalty to it.
They’ve twisted the definition. Patriotism has become a dirty word, tossed in with extremism, ignorance, outdated thinking. But that’s not patriotism. Patriotism is a father standing for the anthem with his hand on his heart. It’s a mother teaching her children the stories of those who fought and died for the freedoms we enjoy. It’s an immigrant who chose this country and defends it even when others won’t. That’s what real patriotism is.
Not loud, not angry, just deeply rooted love and responsibility. But when society punishes that, when the media mocks it, when universities attack it, and politicians ignore it, what happens? A void. A generation that doesn’t know what to believe in. A population too scared to stand for anything. And a country that slowly, silently slips away.
This isn’t just a political shift, it’s a cultural unraveling. And we don’t fix it with slogans or hashtags. We fix it with courage, with people, with ordinary people choosing to remember instead of forgetting. Choosing to speak instead of staying silent. Choosing to love this country, even when it’s hard, even when it’s unpopular. Because if we don’t, if we keep letting them rewrite the story, the day will come when we won’t recognize Canada at all.
We won’t recognize Canada, not because someone stole it, but because we gave it away. We’ve been silent for too long. We’ve watched this country shift, bend and break under pressure, and we said nothing. Or worse, we whispered about it behind closed doors, too afraid to be labeled, judge, or canceled. We traded truth for comfort, conviction for acceptance.
We thought that staying quiet made us neutral, made us kind, made us morally superior. But the truth is, our silence handed over everything we claim to love; our culture, our values, our freedom, all handed away not with a fight but with a shrug.
So, it’s easy to tell ourselves someone else will speak up. It’s easy to pretend that keeping the peace is the same as keeping your principles, but it’s not. You can’t defend a nation if you won’t defend the truth. You can’t claim to care about freedom if you stay silent every time it’s threatened. And you definitely can’t complain about the direction of your country if you were too scared to even whisper a word against it.
What did we stay silent about? Everything that mattered.
We watched national pride be ridiculed. We watched our flag be reduced to a symbol of shame. We watched our history be torn apart and rewritten to fit the feelings of the day. We let them say that our values were oppressive, our beliefs outdated, our love for this land somehow dangerous, and we just stood there, heads down, lips sealed.
Why? To avoid confrontation. To protect our reputation in a world that no longer respects the very freedoms it enjoys. Silence isn’t peacekeeping, it’s surrender. Every time we refuse to push back, we taught the next generation that it’s safer to stay quiet than to stand tall.
We’ve raised children to be cautious of courage, suspicious of pride, allergic to truth. We gave them a world where speaking honestly is controversial and staying silent is applauded. But silence doesn’t age well. The longer you stay quiet, the harder it becomes to find your voice. And, by the time you do, there may be nothing left worth shouting for.
This isn’t just a political problem, it’s a spiritual one. It’s about the soul of a country slowly fading while its people nod along, too passive to act, too polite to disagree. But silence never stays neutral. It always takes a side. And, in this case, our silence sided with those who wanted to weaken us from within.
If a house is on fire and you see it burning but say nothing, you’re part of the problem. That’s where we are now. Canada is burning at its foundations and too many good people, smart people, even patriotic people are standing in the smoke pretending it’s fog.
We’ve been silent for too long and now the cost of silence is echoing through every part of this country. Yet, still most refuse to speak.
Patriotism isn’t bigotry, it’s belonging. And yet, in today’s Canada, we’ve blurred the line so badly that to say you love your country is treated like a warning sign. Suddenly, pride is prejudice. Loyalty is labeled. And belonging, the most natural human instinct is twisted into something dark and dangerous.
This isn’t hate. This is home. This is family.”

Please read my books:

Dr. J. Peterson is a Canadian who was betrayed by Canada. He is a true Canadian Patriot, just like Gen. Satterfield is an American Patriot. There are not enough of these kind of men in our nations. Stand up for your nation, but also be aware that you must also be willing to work to improve your nation and not allow evil to grow, much like we see in the West.
Truly unfortrunate. We are seeing the growth of authoritarianism and that is not good. It alwasy grows in environments of liberalism and hate. We saw this with Joe Biden and Barack Obama. With Trump, we are seeing the last of it violently lash out because those evils are being exposed for what they are.
Another masterpiece by J. peterson.
America is great.
Canada is great, but failing.
The UK is great, but failing.
Austrialia is great, but failing.
What’s up with that?
USA Patriot here.
Weak politicians.
Weak and evil too.
There is nothing like a deep dive into the reasoning behind the failure of the Liberal Canadian government to tell us what NOT to do in America – or anywhere, for that matter. When you give up your history, then you are no longer tied to the world and anything that comes along that looks like a moral anchor, you will grab ahold of and hold on tight. Let’s not forget that that anchor may be corrupt and evil. And taht is a serious issue to contend with as we age. Gen. S., please give us more articles like this on patriotism and wishing you and your wife a great week.
Well said, Dr. P.
Love this by Dr. Jordan Peterson. And, Gen. Satterfield we all appreciate this great find about Canadian patriotism that is being lost.
As a true American, I’m shocked at how far Canada has fallen from being one of the greatest Western nations, full of good, polite, respectful folks into a third-world mess with high crime, mostly in the cities and suburbs. Jordan Peterson exposes this fall in the most raw terms and warns them about continuing down that path. Shame on their political leadership and also shame on their citizens for allowing this to happen.
Yep, turning into a trashy mess. O’ Canada, ye are lost.
I visited Canada about a decade ago. Loved it. My son went there last year and said the cities have become dangerous, just like the big cities in California, Illinois, New York, and Oregon. Liberals have destroyed civilization.
👍👍👍👍👍👍 Well said. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
🇨🇦 Anything with Dr. Peterson means I’m in. Sir, much appreciate this post today about patriotism. 🇨🇦
Arthur, thanks and welcome aboard.
