Know Yourself

By | July 22, 2025

[July 22, 2025]  The Greeks had a maxim, “Know thyself.”  This idea was not new in the time of the Greeks because it was an incredibly ancient way of thinking.  To know yourself is the very first step in realizing, in practical terms, your potential future.

The importance of knowing yourself as the basis of a high-quality and balanced life goes back into the darkness of human antiquity.  It is a story that repeatedly resonates.  Why?  Because it’s true.

In  terms of personality and potential, how do we come to know ourselves?  The first way to understand yourself is to understand what you do not understand.  With practice, you can learn to observe your behavior like that of a stranger.

However, to do this, you must have a form of extreme humility.  There are two sources to this humility: recognizing your ignorance and understanding your potential.

Take great care and think about what you do that makes you better, and then ask yourself what habits you have that hurt you. You will discover a little about your potential as you discover who you are and whether your habits serve your purpose.

You will also discover the darker, dangerous (or evil) part of yourself.  There’s some utility in knowing your potential for mayhem and destruction.

It is essential to realize how to incorporate that dangerous part of yourself into a higher-order personality since only by doing so will it make you unstoppable.  This is how you become a Lion among others.

The other thing you can do to discover yourself is to challenge yourself.  Look at what you could and how you should improve yourself (even if it is very small) by your standards.

Set yourself some small goals to start and take them on.  Then take larger and more significant challenges.  But, begin incrementally, with small steps.  Over time, your efforts will grow exponentially, and you will soon see the payoff.

Start now, and do not be overwhelmed.  Everyone starts when they’re ignorant and biased and deeply flawed and immature.

Challenge yourself continually to see how far past yesterday you can push today and tomorrow.

Repeatedly experiment with expanding the areas of your competence and your ability to increase that competence. The upper limit you can achieve depends on the effort you put into it.

The more it’s accompanied by truth, speech, and action, the more you will develop your potential, truly a voluntary adventure.  Such actions will take you from the ordinary and propel you into a more stable, resilient, reliable, and stalwart being.

There is nothing better you can do for yourself than to know yourself.

Greta start to my day here with Gen. S’s article on the very idea that if we don’t know ourselves, our weaknesses and strengths, our desires and wants, our fears and happiness, that we will never be who we can be. 🕷🕷🕷🕷

As I just noted in a previous post on today’s article (7-23-2025), I’m relaxing before the day starts and getting myself set for a chaotic day ahead. In this article I see that Gen. Satterfield has re-written one of his more popular ideas and a copy of an ancient wisdom. Others have also pointed this out, and I am going to emphasize it. Please take the time to read his books which are linked to below and very much worthy of your time. His books are easy reads, full of wisdom, and to the point. Thanks to all those who work and raise good families.

“You will also discover the darker, dangerous (or evil) part of yourself. There’s some utility in knowing your potential for mayhem and destruction.”– Gen. Doug Satterfield. Now this is true wisdom. And dangerous, not for having a dangerous or evil part of you, but not knowing that it exists and perhaps drives much of your motivations.

Simple and to the point, ” The Greeks had a maxim, “Know thyself.” This idea was not new in the time of the Greeks because it was an incredibly ancient way of thinking. Too bad our politicians are the last to get the word.

I agree with you USA P that our politicians simply don’t know “themselves.” We know that because they keep putting their feet in their mouths for saying stupid things, acting dumb, and projecting their fears upon others. I’ve not met many smart politicians but those from my home state of New York are the worst.

There are many people and subcultures that have zero self awareness and lack humility. There are the first to fail when things go wrong. Just look at the American ghetto culture of the black community. Nuff said.
