[May 16, 2026] The military command ‘stand your ground’ has deep roots in U.S. Army history, dating back to the American Revolutionary War. On the night of April 19, 1775, Captain John Parker gave his now-famous order to his men.
“Stand your ground… Don’t fire until fired upon. But if they want to have a war, let it begin here.”
Captain Parker of the Massachusetts militia mustered the Lexington Company on the Lexington Green in anticipation of a British advance to Concord. The company, made up of farmers and veterans, though outnumbered, returned fire. The brief but bloody exchange was a defensive tactic that was successfully employed to dislodge the British Red Coats.
Stand your ground certainly did not originate in the American colonies in the 1700s, but has been a hard rule in warfare since before the written word. This command bolsters the psychological need of support from those who share danger in the defense. Soldiers standing in tight ranks present a formidable defense against attack.
To stand your ground in combat means you are not going to give up and run away. It means you are fully committed and that the attacker will suffer for any attempt to overcome the defense. Battle is as much psychological (moral) as it is physical.
”In war the moral is to the physical as three to one.” – Napoléon Bonaparte
There are many today who claim that war has changed and that technological advances has made war both more efficient and less moral. While that may be true to some extent, what is undeniable is that war is both psychological and physical; no amount of technology will ever change that.
Stand your ground. Do so bravely and honestly, and you shall never lose a battle.
