[April 02, 2014] Leadership does not mean that in order to be successful, people must like that person. However, it is important for senior leaders to not be in a position of being intensely hated. To be truly hated, that leader must dramatically violate accepted norms of society. Two women today are hated by the major of Americans are: Kathleen Sebelius and Nancy Pelosi.
The woman who currently holds the “most hated woman in America” title is neither of these two. Madalyn Murray O’Hair holds this distinction. Ms O’Hair was an atheist who was in full attack mode on Christianity. She was abrasive, nasty, abused the legal system to trash religion, and got rich doing it. She targeted the heart of America and got away with it … well, almost1.
The most hated Congressional leader today is U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi, according to a recent Gallup poll2. Kathleen Sebelius is regularly described as the “most hated woman in American today”3 in her position as the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Why are these women so “hated” in America today?
I propose that both Secretary Sebelius and Congresswoman Pelosi are hated by so many Americans is because both frequently and publically violate social norms. They show callousness and disdain for the majority of Americans, abuse the legal system to get what they want, and also happen to be abrasive and nasty. They have been also described as corrupt and unable to tell the truth. Both women are also in the undesirable position of defending the “Obamacare” law that is unpopular and getting less popular.
So, which is the most “hated woman in America?” The distinction still goes to Ms O’Hair; at least according to that question being asked a few years ago. As our collective memory of Ms O’Hair fades, others will eventually hold that distinction. Will it be Secretary Sebelius or Congresswoman Pelosi?
