[May 4, 2023] Last week, I received an email from MG John Rafferty, the U.S. Army Chief of Public Affairs, regarding his efforts to improve recruiting. Attached to the email were five attachments, one titled “Key Messages on Army Recruiting Challenge (abridged)” as of 14 February 2023. Essentially he said, We are not woke!
In the attachment, he lays out “How We Got Here,” meaning the low recruiting numbers the U.S. Army has seen for the past two years. The specific things he lists I’ve heard since I joined. He lists a strong U.S. job market, fierce competition from the private sector, military benefits are now more available in the private sector, and the fact that the pandemic has not helped. MG Rafferty sounds like woke college presidents who cannot figure out their declining enrollments.
MG Rafferty goes on to justify why the U.S. Army is failing to recruit to their goals and get quality Soldiers. At the end of the attachment is only one question. Here it is:
Anticipated Question:
Q: Isn’t the Army struggling to recruit because it is too “woke,” too focused on climate change, and too focused on vaccines?
A: That is not what we see, and the data does not bear that out.
o Our research shows that the top barriers to service are concerns about death or injury, PTSD, emotional issues, and leaving friends and family – not political issues. Concerns about vaccines and “wokeness” are among the least likely (5% and 6%, respectively) to be raised as reasons not to join the military.
He is wrong.
When did we ever see the U.S. Army (and now the U.S. Navy) organizing Drag Queen Shows, encouraging transgender citizens to enlist, blaming all the world’s problems on whites who are racists, and such nonsense? Who would want to join? MG Rafferty has his head where it should not be.
The first thing you have to do as a woke advocate is lie. And MG Rafferty is a liar. What is sad is that he knows he is lying to us. Here is a message he might not know: Even 18-year-olds know he is lying, so they are not joining the U.S. Army.

Much of the emphasis of wokeness today is on promoting the idea that America is fatally flawed by systemic racism and white privilege. Our fighting men and women are required to sit through indoctrination programs, often with roots in the Marxist tenets of critical race theory, either by Pentagon diktat or through carelessness by senior leaders who delegate their command responsibilities to private Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion instructors. Strip him of all his rank and medals, make him walk the walk of shame out of the Pentagon, and ensure his name is removed from all hallways that honor our heroes. Most of the problem here is that we allow feminine Generals to get promoted who know nothing about America or our history and what they do know, are willing to lie about it. Generals like Rafferty are a stain on the honor of our fighting men and women. So Sad. So offensive. I’m taking names and will never let them have peace on social media. Woke ideology undermines military readiness in various ways. It undermines cohesiveness by emphasizing differences based on race, ethnicity, and sex. It undermines leadership authority by introducing questions about whether promotion is based on merit or quota requirements. It leads to military personnel serving in specialties and areas for which they are not qualified or ready. And it takes time and resources away from training activities and weapons development that contribute to readiness. Wokeness in the military also affects relations between the military and society at large. It acts as a disincentive for many young Americans in terms of enlistment. And it undermines wholehearted support for the military by a significant portion of the American public at a time when it is needed the most.
