Pope Leo XIV and Biblical Doctrine

[May 21, 2025]  This past weekend Pope Leo XIV was inaugurated in Rome and saw thousands turnout for this momentous event. But what does it mean for the Roman Catholic faith?  Will the new Pope return Catholicism to its Biblical roots?

Pope XIV confirms that the family is founded on the stable union between a man and a woman. This position is a departure from the more liberalized version adopted by Pope Francis. The prior Pope blessed LGBTQIA+ relationships in an attempt to make his church more relevant in the modern era.

The backlash was immediate and vicious. The most outspoken opposition to Pope Leo’s position came from American and European political leftist leaders and the West’s media. For example, The View, a popular television show for women, was apoplectic in its opposition to the new Pope’s stance.

Pope Leo also reaffirmed the church’s stance on abortion, saying that the unborn and elderly also enjoy dignity as God’s creatures. Liberal online and traditional media outlets blasted the Pope for his views. Here is one malevolent comment that gives us a good idea of how virulent the opposition has become.

“I do think it’s fairly tragic that the new pope has regressive views on gender and sexuality, but I think all the people stanning [sic] the cardinals forgot that the Catholic Church is an inherently evil institution, Pope Francis was sort of a fluke and even he was far from perfect.” — jolene of arc

Others have stepped up to make a more reasonable comment that Pope Leo is more of a return to the traditional Catholic faith. The new Pope said emphatically that “abortion is demonically evil.”

He also said that truth must be spoken even with blunt language. No ambiguity. No compromise. Just clarity.

Pope Leo, while conservative in these views, has also criticized President Trump for America’s views on immigration and deportations as a violation of human dignity. This position is no surprise. Many predicted this based on the “compassion” put forward in the church.

Past attempts to make the Catholic Church more “relevant” have backfired, driving many of the most devout away. Whenever church leaders say they want to make the church more relevant, they are saying that the church’s principles are not as important. And that is shameful.

Let us pray that Pope Leo returns to the fundamentals of Catholicism that made it so basic to understand and accept, rather being the “new” thing on the block and downplaying the word of God.

Pen Q, one would think that the decision is easy. With a declining number of people who are becoming Catholics and the infusion of ungodly behavior that is not just tolerated but encourage, you’d think the church would push back on these ideas. But NO. Pope Francis encouraged the degradation of the church. And for those who say that Catholics are intolerant, be aware that they reject no one, regardless of belief. You can always be saved.

I consider myself a good Christian and while I am not a Catholic, I certianly pay close attention to what the Pope says about Christianity. I think we need to give the new Pope a chance to prove that he has Christianity in his sights to do us all good and not be distracted by “relevant issues in modern times.” Good for him that he made it clear that marriage is between a man and a women and that abortion is evil. I’m with Gen. Satterfield on these issues too.

I’m happier with a less-leftist as the new Pope.

Paulette, yes, and many of us will agree. But these Popes and, frankly, many who achieved high positions quickly, often think they are good with making comments about things they know little about. I see this all the time. And here we have the new Pope commenting not just about marriage and abortion (which he should) but also about America’s immigration policies, which he knows little. Allowing unmitigated and uncontrolled immigration into America has the secondary effect of high crime, human trafficking, incoming deadly drugs, the expansion of exploitation of the innocent, increased violence and murder, etc.

Yep, better to keep his mouth shut about national politics and not allow folks to know you’re ignorant than open his mouth, like he did, and prove publicly that he is dumb dumb dumb.

This new Pope seems to be on the right track by keeping Catholicism on the traditional path.

I’m praying that this new Pope doesn’t go, off on some tangent like the last Leftist pope did.

Yep, and I don’t think he will. From what I’ve read and watch so far on the media (that is extremely leftist biased), this new Pope is bringing the world back to its baseline of believing in God and that the only path to salvation is through him

There are lots of crazy anti-religious and anti-Catholic folks out there. And for some reason, these folks are all political leftists.

🙏 I’m not Catholic but I do respect the Catholic Church. While there are problems with any religion because that church is operated by man – who is imperfect – we strive to that perfection as a goal to be the very best person we can be. Follow Jesus and you cannot be lost. 🙏

Right, Pastor Jim 🙏. Too many outsiders to the Catholic Church believe it is bad because of the evil done in its name and also because there are bad people who are Catholic. This argument doesn’t work. And while some may believe that Catholicism is “evil”, like this jolene of arc, she and those others are themselves in the wilderness of their lives and are, ultimately, unhappy with their own lives.
